The CSS Zen Garden is a really neat web project that showcases the power of designing with modern web standards. Developers are invited to submit their own CSS file and graphics to alter the look and feel of the site. They are not allowed to alter the site's markup. There are now hundreds of submissions that provide a lot of inspiration to anyone that enjoys web design. If you think that accessible, standards compliant sites have to be boring or ugly, you should check it out.
I submitted a design. It didn't make the official list, but can still be found in the "conceptual" section. The theme is based on some fractals that I made using a free program called Fractint.
